How do I access Outlook Web Access (OWA)?

1) Type the url http://exchange.ss.ucla.edu in any browser or click here.

2) Login with your email username (everything before the @). Enter your exchange password. This may be different then your webmail password.

3) After Login you will be taken to your inbox.

Am I required to use Internet Explorer 6? What are the differences between premium and basic in OWA?

Outlook Web Access offers two modes: premium and basic. The premium mode can only be utilized with Internet Explorer 6. Firefox and Opera can access the basic mode of Outlook Web Access.

Below is a list of the differences between Outlook Web Access premium and Outlook Web Access basic.

Premium features not in basic:

  • Reading mode layout
  • get address properties from Reading Pane
  • Reminder window

Messaging
  • Folder hierarchy in Navigation Pane
  • Attachments can be opened from Reading and Preview Panes
  • Information Bar available in Preview and Reading Panes, Spell check,

How do I change my Exchange password?

1) If you forgot your password, please email exchange@ssc.ucla.edu from another email, or call x62821. In the email, please include your name and your ID.

2) After you receive a default password, log-in following the instructions in FAQ 1.

3) In your inbox, click on Options, at the bottom left of your browser.

4) On the Options menu, scroll down and click on the "Change Password" option.

5) On the new menu, type in your email username (everything before the @) and the default password sent to you in the email. Type in your new password and confirm it.

6) Click on Save and Close at the top.

How do I setup a vacation message in OWA?

Do NOT use the SSC Webmail client to set a vacation message. Doing so may result in a delay in receiving email. Only use Outlook Web Access to set a vacation message.

1) After you login, click on Options, at the bottom left of your browser.

2) On the Options menu, under the "Out of Office Assistant" click on the button, I'm currently out of the office. Type in a message that will be auto sent to each user who emails you.

3) When you want to remove your vacation message, uncheck the button that says "I'm currently out of the office." This can be done in OWA or in Outlook. For instructions on creating vacation messages in Outlook, click here.

4) Click on Save and Close at the top.

How do I access a shared calendar/contacts/tasks in OWA??

1) Log-into Outlook Web Access.

2) To view a calendar, from your inbox, enter "/USERNAME/calendar" (without the quotes) after https://exchange.ss.ucla.edu/exchange in the Address bar. USERNAME is the person's calendar who you are trying to open.

3) The user must give your rights to view a shared resource, otherwise Outlook Web Access will log you off. If this happens, click on Home and click on Outlook Web Access in order to log back in.

4) To view a shared contacts, enter "/USERNAME/contacts" (without the quotes) after https://exchange.ss.ucla.edu/exchange.

5) To view a shared Tasks, enter "/USERNAME/tasks" (without the quotes) after https://exchange.ss.ucla.edu/exchange.

How do I enable spell checking in OWA?

1) After you login, click on Options, at the bottom left of your browser.

2) Scroll down to Spelling Options and check "Always check spelling before sending." The other checkboxes may speed up the spell check process.

3) When you now send a message, it will now spell check with a scan box like the one below. It will also prompt you for spelling recommendations. It may take awhile to scan the entire document, depending on the size of the email.

4) Click on Save and Close at the top.

How do I change the appearance of my inbox?

1) You can change the color of your inbox to silver, blue, dark blue, etc.

2) After you login, click on Options, at the bottom left of your browser.

3) Scroll down until you see the Appearance options box.

4) Select the color scheme you would like and click on Save and Close at the top of the Options menu.

What are some shortcut keys for Outlook Web Access?

Open the selected message/contact, appointment etc. depending on the current folder you’re in.

Ctrl+N

Open/create a new message, appointment, contact etc. depending on the current folder you’re in.

Ctrl+R

Reply to the selected message.

Ctrl+U

Mark selected message as unread

Ctrl+Q

Mark the selected message as read.

Ctrl+K

Resolve the names in the address boxes (ALT+K can also be used)

Ctrl+Shift+R

"Reply all" to the selected message.

Ctrl+Shift+F

Forward the selected message.

Del

Delete the selected message.

Shift+Del

Permanently delete the selected message.

F7

Check the spelling in a message.
