What is ArcGIS?

ArcView is a geographic information system (GIS) that brings the power of interactive mapping and analysis to everyone. Available for Windows, Macintosh, and a variety of UNIX platforms, ArcView is a complete desktop system for storing, modifying, querying, analyzing, and displaying information about places as near as your local neighborhood or as remote as Antarctica. ArcView offers:

  • An intuitive graphic user interface
  • State-of-the-art data display and viewing tools
  • Support for sophisticated spatial and tabular queries
  • "Hot links" to other desktop applications and data types
  • Business graphics functions - charting, bar and pie charts, and more
  • Map symbolization, design, and layout capabilities

New features in version 3.2 include: General performance enhancements, Shapefile projection utility, Updated Database Access 2, Updated Report Writer extension--Seagate Crystal Reports Version 7.0, New data integration utilities, New sample utilities and extensions, New and updated "ESRI Data & Maps".
