Real Player is an internet multimedia streaming application used to play file supporting real media (i.e. Real Audio, Real Video, etc.)
Since Real is normally used for multimedia internet streaming, it is considered a plug-in for your web browser. When you click on links to real media files, the appliation automatically executes.
