Social Sciences Computing eliminated unsecured telnet and ftp access on our UNIX Systems as of December 15, 2003. The main reason for this change is that unsecured telnet and ftp are vulnerable to hacks because they transmit passwords in transparent ASCII. This susceptibility allows hackers to perform "man in the middle" attacks and "sniff' user passwords.
Our users should download and install the SSH Secure Shell Client for telnet and ftp access because both passwords and data are encrypted during the SSH sessions.
- SSC has provided a support page for SSH which can be found here.
