UCLA (BOL) Email Blocked by Barracuda
The SSC email administrator has confirmed that Barracuda is blocking email sent from Bruin Online (@ucla.edu) email accounts. Please see below for a detailed explanation:
- Bruin Online posted an updated advisory on PHISHING scams hitting UCLA email accounts (http://www.bol.ucla.edu/alert/20080307.html). Some individuals may have fallen victim to the scam.
- As a result, spammers may have used these ID/Password to distribute thousands of spams from UCLA email accounts. Spammers also used BOL mail server IP addresses (not necessarily actual mail accounts because these could spoof easily) leading to RBL blacklist of the originating IP addresses.
- Any users sending from a BOL IP address to SSC email accounts will receive a block notification. The blocked user can respond by clicking on the URL that accompanies the notification. For
example:
(reason: 554 Service unavailable; Client host [smtp-xx.smtp.ucla.edu] blocked using Barracuda Reputation;
http://bbl.barracudacentral.com/q.cgi?ip=169.232.xx.xx)
- This will allow Barracuda to temporarily bypass the INTENT checking analysis while the offending IP Address is being investigated.
- SSC encourages our customers to report these incidences to abuse@ucla.edu with a forward of the rejection email from Barracuda Intent Analysis. Please provide full headers so BOL can trace the problem.
- If you are using BOL (@ucla email), we recommend changing temporarily to your ISP's outgoing SMTP to prevent your mail.ucla.edu email from being blocked by other email systems that use BLACKLISTS as a way of blocking spam.
- Unfortunately, SSC cannot whitelist BOL Mail Server IP Addresses because many Social Sciences customers forward their BOL emails to SSC where more than 90% of these forwarded messages are SPAM. By applying a global whitelist for BOL (UCLA) IP Addresses, we would be allowing a FLOOD of spam directly into our customers' Inboxes.
SSC appreciates your understanding as UCLA email administrators work to get this situation resolved.
Please email support@ssc.ucla.edu or call x62821 if you have additional questions or concerns.
HAPPY COMPUTING!
